1 AM Gallery
Folsom and 6th Street
1 AM Gallery has been in this site before.  Their new exhibition is entitled Dark Mater.  What I love about the gallery is that they always do graffiti/murals regarding the current exhibit on the side of their building.
I love the concept of just using black and white for this.
The exhibit explores the darker side of the human psyche. Gathering the voices of eight emerging contemporary artists working across mediums, the aim is to examine and confront the mysterious and sometimes sinister side of human nature.

Union Square – San Francisco
Saks Fifth Avenue – Fifth Floor
It is difficult to write about Union Square when discussing art.  The only form of art that you actually find is the pursuance of the all mighty dollar.  It is what many think of when they travel to our fair city, and it’s center is a magnificent open space, but public art is sparse.  For that reason, I was thrilled when the great people at 1 AM Gallery had the opportunity to create this piece on the fifth floor of the women’s Saks Fifth Avenue.
1:AM is a prolific group of artist both at their gallery and around town.  They have shown up many times on this website. They are a super group of people doing lots of great things with their community and public art.  If you get the chance, walk down to the gallery at 1000 Howard Street and see the latest exhibition.

SOMA
7th and Brannan

Another great mural by the gang at 1AM

I spoke with Dan at 1:AM and this is what he had to say about this mural:

For “Knowledge is Golden” the inspiration was specific to the area which the mural was done. San Francisco is seeing its second gold rush with information and knowledge being the currency of today. SOMA, being slated to be developed as the new downtown of San Francisco with technology leading the transformation, is why we chose this location for our message.

Gold miners have been replaced by tech innovators. Pickaxes and shovels have been replaced with laptops and desktops. Though the times have changed, the human thirst for chasing opportunity remains prevalent in these times. And with this influx of new people, San Francisco culture as we know it will never be the same.

The mural is done by Roman Cesario, Jurne, Robert Gonzalez, and Daniel Pan

This mural, (on  the outside of Claudine Restaurant) is by Vogue TDK.  According to an interview he did with 1:AM he got into graffiti in late 1984, after school, I turned on the TV to the local PBS station and caught the start of the documentary “Style Wars”.  There was a scene where there was a MTA train moving down the tracks, then the train curves to show some graff and that was it.  I was hooked and knew that is what I was going to do.

As far as why he is the artist he is today: I always did some sort of art throughout school.  With the help of my parents, after graduating high school, I attended Academy of Arts in San Francisco, majoring in graphic design.  After two years of that, I switched majors to illustration for another two years.  During my schooling at the Academy, I incorporated my spray painting in both my homework and random jobs. A lot of what I learned at school translated on to the constant painting I did at the 23rd Oakland tracks.  On the flip side, what I learned from my fellow graff peers and what I learned on my own also started appearing in my schoolwork.

The mural that flows to the interior of the restaurant is by Leon Loucheur, who is responsible for the Make Moves mural in SOMA.   Leon is part of the Chamber Made Group.

This is a 1:AM gallery mural

The mastermind behind the Make Moves mural is 1:AM Art Director/Co-Owner, Roman Cesario.  The 1AM mural is a collaboration between their in-house artists.  They are Leon Loucheur , Robert Gonzales , Gavin Fuller , Roman Cesario , and Jessico Serrano.  This mural represents the ability to overcome, hustle , grind, work together , and rebuild. Anyone can be or do anything , there are no limits.  Roman and the team  at 1AM have a vision to spread positive messages through vibrant murals that will motivate and inspire people

There is a photo of it without any cars on Leon Loucheur’s website and also 1:AM Gallery’s site.

1 AM Gallery
SOMA
Howard and Sixth Street
1 AM Gallery always has murals done on their wall to celebrate their newest art installation inside.  The installation this month is “When We Were Kids”.  The background to this is lettering, but I thought the cartoon characters were worth a shout out.

Here is the overall mural taken from across the street.
1 AM Gallery has been in this website many times before. Check out their work around town.  Please also note – that 1:AM uses this wall as a teaching experience so the murals change all the time.

Claude Lane Mural

Union Square – San Francisco
Claude Lane

Claude Lane is a small alley that runs between Bush and Sutter Streets in San Francisco.  It began developing in 1989 when Cafe Claude opened up with an alley entrance.  It blossomed over the years and now rivals Belden Place for shopping, dining and that European cafe experience.

Mear painted this mural on the side of Gitane Restaurant at the behest of its owner.  This was done in co-operation with that wonderful group 1:AM that have been in this website before.  I talked to Mear via phone, as he lives in L.A. and he told me he drew his inspiration from all the colors that were in the alley, and the symbolism of people sitting and enjoying the food and the space.

You can see that vast amount of his accomplishments at his website.

SOMA – San Francisco

This mural is on a building at the corner of 7th and Folsom Streets, (It is on the 7th Street side) in the South of Market area of San Francisco.

It was done by 1:AM short for First Amendment, a gallery at 1000 Howard Street in San Francisco.

According to 1:AM they are “a gallery that stands behind the freedom of speech.  We strive to showcase, teach, and inspire the public on street and urban art through our exhibitions, education, and street productions…  With the gallery, classes, and a veteran mural production team, 1:AM has become a pillar in San Francisco street art culture. ”

I contacted 1:AM to see what the mural was all about and this is what one of the artists told me:

“My name is Robert and I’m one of the artist involved with the mural. We really appreciate the communities interest and curiosity about the mural. We painted this mural more for the public in that area, seeing as how that particular wall is often plagued with graffiti. The theme of the murals we usually paint have to do with the community and the surrounding area. For example, this mural is down the street from court and gets a lot of foot traffic from people either going or coming from court. It’s intended to be a positive and uplifting work of art, for people who usually would be stressed out from either work or just having a bad day, thus the vibrant and exciting colors used along with the playful phrase, ‘cus after all “That’s Califor’ya!” ”

UPDATE 4/2013   There was a slight mishap with a mistaken painting over of this mural.  It is back with a few minor changes – here is the new view.
